Water Scarcity in Hyderabad

Drinking Water Shortage Problems in Telangana: This time not a single reservoir has been completely filled. The ponds have not been drained to any great extent. There is no need to mention the condition of the streams. As a result, the state’s groundwater is getting depleted more and more during the rainy season. Compared to last year, the state’s water level in September has dropped by an average of 3.11 meters.

The groundwater level, which was at 4.41 meters in September 2025, has dropped to a depth of 7.52 meters this September, posing a danger to drinking water. To this extent, the Director of the State Groundwater Resources Department, K. Lakshma, has released a report related to water. The details of the report are as follows.

Danger warnings

It is normal for the groundwater level to drop by the month of May every year. This is due to high water consumption due to the summer season. This year, the average groundwater level in the state was recorded at 7.87 meters in May. During the southwest monsoon season from June to September, water is supposed to enter the ground and recharge the land. But due to the lack of rains due to El Nino, the groundwater has been depleted.

Due to the high temperatures, there is also a lot of water vapor. The Meteorological Department has revealed that there will be no more heavy rains. This means that the percentage of water remaining in the soil will be very low. Due to this, water resources department officials indicate that there will also be a problem for drinking water from October to the end of May 2027.

Severe impact on the capital

The groundwater level in Hyderabad district has fallen the most, causing concern. While the average in this district was 3.57 meters in September 2025, it has fallen by 6.44 meters in September this year to 10.01 meters. In Medchal-Malkajgiri district, it has fallen by 6.29 meters to 11.64 meters, compared to an average of 5.35 meters. In Vikarabad district, groundwater has fallen from 5.79 meters to 11.96 meters. That is, it has gone down to a depth of 6.17 meters. In Rangareddy district, it has gone from 6.31 meters to 11.74 meters, in Mahabubnagar district from 5.27 meters to 10.51, and in Sangareddy district from 6.08 to 11.21 meters.
